Upper Dewey Lake

Enjoying my first real sunset in months

Skagway had a rare day of sunshine on my day off yesterday so I hiked with a few friends up to Upper Dewey Lake in the afternoon. Last time I was up there in June I was still sliding around on three feet of snow, so needless to say things looked a bit different this time around. The days have been getting shorter lately and we're actually getting a fair amount of darkness again. Since we got a bit of a late start I got to enjoy my first sunset since May and I even saw a few stars!

AB Mountain

View from halfway up the mountain, town of Skagway in the valley on the right
In mid-July, after several weeks of they typical Southeast Alaska rain we had a rare day of sunshine, so I took advantage of it by heading up AB mountain after work. I started at 6pm and finished the 10 mile round trip with a 5,052 foot gain in elevation at exactly midnight. Fortunately in mid-summer the sun never sets so I had plenty of light. What I didn't have was plenty of clothing. I was surprised to find snow still at the top of the mountain, so I only spent about 30 minutes at the summit enjoying the view before I headed back down. Here are a few pictures from my trip.

Summer in Skagway

View from work
Since getting back from Senegal I've been spending most of my time away from the internet, working and playing and trying to figure out how to readjust to this crazy American life. I'm living in Skagway, Alaska for the summer and working as a zipline guide for Alaska Excursions. I figured I just spent the last two years working for free, I might as well get paid to play for a while. Being surrounded by mountains, lakes and waterfalls makes it tough to sit down in front of a computer screen for very long, so I've been worse at keeping in touch now than I was when I was living on another continent. Sorry for the lack of communication, but its been nice living in the real world for a while and readjusting to the first world lifestyle at my own pace. Hopefully when I get back to the lower 48 this winter I'll almost be socially acceptable again...although what passes for normal in Alaska is probably not quite on par with the rest of the country. Over the next few weeks I'll try and post some pictures of what I've been up to since April, although if the weather stays this nice I can't make any promises!
